Travel Tips for Reaching Syros: Ferries and Flights

There are several ways to reach Syros Island, and the price, route, and duration of travel can vary depending on the season. Here are some detailed tips to help you plan your journey. 😉

  1. Find the Best Flight to Greece
Start by searching for the best flight to Greece using platforms like Skyscanner. It’s beneficial to explore flights from different cities, particularly those closest to your home, to find the most cost-effective and quickest options. The nearest major airport to Syros is Athens, which offers flights throughout the year from numerous European cities. In the summer, explore flights to Mykonos, Santorini, and Heraklion, as they offer easy ferry connections to Syros.
  2. Booking a Ferry
Ferry schedules are published seasonally, so you can book your ferry tickets a few months in advance. Waiting for the schedule release gives you more options. Our favourite apps is FerryHopper. Regarding ferries, you have a choice to make between quickest ferries (Seajets) but more expensive and slower but really good Blue Star ferries. Honnestly, Blue Star is really good for the value and we generally choose to travel with them. Alternatively, you might find direct flights from Athens or Thessaloniki to Syros, which are faster though slightly more expensive, allowing you to land directly at the national airport.
  3. Exploring Athens Before Heading to Syros
If your journey takes you through Athens, consider spending a few days exploring this fascinating city. Known for its incredible history and vibrant culture, Athens offers a rich experience for travelers.
  4. Traveling from Athens Airport to the City
To travel from Athens Airport to the city, you have two main options: the metro or the bus. The metro is a direct line (blue line) taking you to the city center (Syntagma) in about 40 minutes and to Piraeus in an hour, costing 9€ per person. Alternatively, the X95 bus line reaches Syntagma in approximately an hour for 5.50€, while the X96 line goes to Piraeus in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, costing 6.50€.
  5. Consider Alternative Routes During Peak Season
In the summer, consider taking direct ferries to Syros from islands like Mykonos, Santorini, and Heraklion. This option not only provides a scenic route but also allows you to explore other stunning islands on your way to Syros.

So, now you’re ready to travel to Syros. We are waiting for you, guys 😉
