DISCOVER : Agio Stefanos

One of the most enchanting routes is the hike to Agio Stefanos, a site that combines history, spirituality, and breathtaking views.

Discovering the Trail

Hiking to Agio Stefanos is not just an adventure for nature enthusiasts but also an immersion into the culture and history of Syros. The trail usually starts in the village of Galissas. You can reach Galissas by bus (20 minutes from Ermoupoli), then it’s a 40 minutes walk to reach to beginning of the path. It’s important to allow about 45 minutes to reach your destination, depending on your pace (and back). Obviously, if you rent a car, it allows you to avoid the first 40minutes of walk from Galissas village because you can go almost until the beginning of the path driving.

Preparing for the hike : What to Bring

• Hiking Shoes: The terrain can be rocky and uneven, so it’s essential to have good shoes to ensure your comfort and safety.
• Water and Snacks: Make sure to stay hydrated, especially during the summer months when it’s hotter.
• Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential to protect you from UV rays, especially during summer when the temperatures can be really high (even until 40°C).

• Best Time to Visit: The best time to undertake this hike is during spring or autumn when the weather is milder and the landscapes are even more lush.

Arrival at Agio Stefanos

At the end of the trail, you will be welcomed by the small chapel of Agio Stefanos, nestled in a cave by the sea. This chapel, dedicated to Saint Stephen, offers a place of tranquility and contemplation. According to local legend, it was built by a fisherman in gratitude for escaping drowning.

From the chapel, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea, with its turquoise waters. It’s the ideal spot to relax after the hike, enjoy a picnic, or simply meditate on the surrounding beauty.
