VISIT SYROS ISLAND

Syros island is the capitale of Cyclades in the Aegan Sea. It’s a 83,6 km2 island but only its southern part is inhabited. In the north, is all nature, lush vegetation and sea.

Ermoupoli is the main city of the island and is named in reference to Hermes, “City of Hermes”. It stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions, and white houses cascading down to the harbour. It was built during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus, creating a link between east and west.

What you need to know about Syros Island, it’s that there is always sometimes great to do. It’s not only a place where you can spend your all vacation by the sea, swimming and enjoying the sun.

It has a long and amazing history that you can discover through many museums or hiking. There is a movie theater, outside during summer and indoor during winter. It’s the only island in Cyclades where you can find an indoor movie theater. There’s also a theater with amazing show to attend : music, comedy, dance, stand up…

The architecture is totally different of the cycladic style.

Even if you’re a sport lover, you will find games to watch, teams to support. Syros has an amazing volley-ball team, playing professional in the first division of Greek Volleyball Championship, and a great football team, which will play in the Superleague II next year.
